In the kitchen there is always a Spring, fragrant and clean air. This is possible thanks to the hoods which, integrating sophisticated technologies, allow you to easily restore the quality of the air, purifying it. So you can say goodbye both to unpleasant odors, which can be released with food cooking, and to pollutants present in the environment. Comfort and well-being also pass through the quality of domestic air and today hoods are increasingly the protagonists of the kitchen, with appliances standing out for their technological level, without neglecting design.

AirO’ technology by Baraldi
Wall by Baraldi is equipped with the AirO’ module, which uses plasma technology to enrich the air with negative ions that are beneficial for health. So bad odors can be quickly eliminated from the kitchen and, leaving the device in operation for a few hours, it is also possible to break down viruses, bacteria, mould, spores and fungi by up to 99.5%. AirO’ is designed to last over 45,000 hours without the need for maintenance. Furthermore, it is independent of the main flow of the suction motor and can therefore be activated only when needed. In addition, it has a timer that allows to turn off the purification function after 1 or 24 hours. Wall is available in black or stainless steel colors and features 4 speeds (including intensive mode), high power and low consumption LEDs and electronic control panel. The hood, filtering or aspirating, has an automatic switch-off function, indicators for cleaning and replacing filters, and a washable multi-layer aluminum grease filter.

Like Zephyro’s breath
In the Greek mythology, Zephyro is the personification of the sweet wind, of the breeze that accompanies the Spring season. And it is just by this mythological figure that B.S. Service was inspired for giving the name to its new patented photocatalytic filtering system, able to allow the hoods in which it is integrated to purify and sanitize the environment, eliminating up to 99% of allergens, molds and bacteria even in just one hour of operation through air circulation. Zephyro can find application in different types of the company hoods (built-in, down draft, ceiling and wall-mounted) so as to offer the end user not only a technology capable of guaranteeing greater well-being but also the possibility of choosing the solution that best suits specific needs.

The leaf sensor that monitors the air
Marilyn E.ion is one of the Falmec hoods equipped with the E.ion System. This technology, through controlled bipolar ionization, eliminates odors and restores air quality. The leaf-shaped sensor detects the presence of volatile organic compounds, odorous gases, formaldehyde, cigarette smoke and all pollutants present in the air: depending on the environmental conditions it changes color (from yellow to green) and, if necessary, activates the hood automatically so that the air is purified. Not only. The appliance also integrates the Carbon.Zeo filter (which combines zeolite and activated carbon to retain odors and vapours) and features perimeter extraction, LED lighting and touch control panel. Marilyn E.ion is an island hood which is also characterized by its sophisticated design with tempered glass and white ceramic finish.

AirMate, the intelligent system of FIM
The AirMate system, which distinguishes the Canopo AirMate hood by FIM, automates both ventilation and lighting, as well as offering a smart home and smartphone integration via the appropriate app with which user can constantly monitor the state of the air in the kitchen. The appliance is equipped with 11 sensors that measure a series of parameters, such as fine particles (PM2.5), total volatile organic compounds (TVOC), CO2, humidity, temperature etc. Using a variety of complex algorithms, the hood is able to guarantee optimal ventilation by regulating the extraction speed and thus ensuring an odor-free cooking, minimal noise levels, reduced energy consumption and indoor air quality. Canopo AirMate continues to fan in silent mode once cooking is finished, until the healthiness of the environment is completely restored. Finally, the automatic LED lights are dimmable to adapt to the user’s wishes.

For appliances that come into contact with food, hygiene is essential. But how much effort can it cost to keep the oven or hob clean? Not much today, given that the most innovative products are also made with ease of cleaning in mind. The smooth surfaces of the glass-ceramic induction hobs make it easy to remove stains and food residues. In addition the construction methods of the suction hobs facilitates to remove the filters and their maintainance. Even ovens are equipped with technologies that allow to clean the appliance without too much effort by using steam or heat.

Steam: for cooking but also for cleaning
The Steamer and Combi-Steamer ovens of the V-Zug Excellence Line make of steam technology one of their strengths, not only for cooking but also for simplifying the cleaning of an appliance among the traditionally most tiring to clean ones. The steam cleaning program can be selected through the display: without the use of detergents, the stainless steel cooking chamber shines again, easily removing light dirt. In the case of more stubborn stains and residues, the steam power can also be combined with the special SteamerCleaner detergent, developed by the company. The oven guides the user through each stage of the process in order to achieve the best cleaning results. The appliances of the Excellence Line are managed through the CircleSlider, a control module cut into the glass of the control panel and positioned in the center of the touch display: in practice it is the evolved and interactive version of the classic adjustment knob.

Pyrolytic, Eco pyrolytic and steam cleaning
Different cleaning methods are possible with GEBD12404BPH oven by Grundig, belonging to the Prologue line. Starting with pyrolysis, a self-cleaning method which, by bringing the appliance to high temperatures, eliminates dirt by carbonising it. Splashes, grease stains and food encrustations are practically reduced to ashes so that their residues can then be easily removed with a cloth. The oven also allows to take advantage of the Eco pyrolytic function, which can be used when the appliance is not excessively dirty: a shorter cycle is activated at a lower temperature. Finally, this multifunctional model, which allows to carry out steam assisted cooking, also features a steam cleaning function. Among the other pluses of the product, there is the SmartAeroPro technology, inspired by aerodynamics: the fan rotates in two directions, minimizing temperature fluctuations and ensuring uniform cooking.

Well-being in the kitchen also depends on the air you breathe. And when it comes to hoods, well-being means innovative technologies able to eliminate bad smells and cooking vapors, restoring the quality of the indoor air. The possibility to choose between suction and filtering models responds to the different needs of users, to find the most suitable solution for a specific environment. Furthermore, the functional effectiveness is combined with a wide range of aesthetic proposals for a perfect integration with furniture and other appliances.

Matrix by Falmec

E.ion System technology
Matrix is the suction solution of the E.ion collection by Falmec. The E.ion System technology, through controlled bipolar ionization, allows to recreate the atmospheric ions in the kitchen which naturally eliminate unpleasant odors and contribute to psychophysical well-being. The leaf-shaped sensor, integrated in the hood, detects the presence of volatile organic compounds (VOC), odorous gases, formaldehyde, cigarette smoke and all other pollutants: it works as an indicator to measure the quality of the home air, changing color (from yellow to green) depending on the environmental conditions. Furthermore, thanks to the automatic function, the hood activates by itself if the sensor perceives a worsening of indoor air quality, purifying it. Matrix is composed of an anodized aluminum structure, with a satin glass volume that gives it a material effect. The functional part is flanked by table tops in smoked glass, where it is possible to house kitchen items.

Plasma filter technology
Thanks to the Plasma filtering technology, the Galvamet Hub pendant island hood allows to eliminate up to 95% of the odors spreading in the kitchen: this appliance purifies the air without the need for pipes, thus combining efficiency and sober elegance. The hood is equipped with a touch screen with which to select the 3 speeds, in addition to the Booster mode. Moreover, Hub can also be controlled with the remote control. The appliance has an adjustable delayed self-shutdown function and alerts the user when maintenance is required on the grease filter. In addition, both the temperature and the intensity of the light can be adjusted. Hub is available in 160 and 120 cm versions. In particular, Hub 160 offers unprecedented opportunities of use (for example as a glasses holder and with side shelf) and Hub 120 is available in the version consisting of the hood element (120 cm) and the shelf element (60 cm), redesigning the space with a contemporary style.

Air is sanitized with the AirO' system
Wall by Baraldi integrates the AirO' air sanitizer. The system is characterized by a Plasma generator that releases large quantities of negative ions into the air, which are beneficial to health and capable of eliminating pathogens. The AirO' system works separately from the primary flow of the hood: when the user needs to purify the air, he can activate the sanitizing function which eliminates cooking odors in 15/30 minutes. If, on the other hand, the system is left to run for a few hours (a timer deactivates it after 24 hours), the organic elements, including viruses, bacteria, spores, fungi and molds, are reduced by up to 99.5%.
24h function and Carbon finish
The new Bertazzoni KT90P1ANT wall hood (Professional Series) is equipped with the 24h function, which carries out a continuous air exchange. The hood features 3 speeds + Booster, A+ energy class and stainless steel filters. In addition, it is also available with a Carbon finish which uses the same paint applied to the most famous Italian luxury sports cars.

Baraldi Elea hood

Minimal hoods are characterized by a style that enhances the purity of the shapes: lines are essential and colors range mainly from stainless steel, to black, to white, making these appliances easily to be integrated with the other elements of the kitchen. The variety of solutions and finishes makes it possible to satisfy different needs, depending on the preferences of the end user. Furthermore, the linearity of the aesthetics is combined with the effectiveness of these devices which contain a high-tech “heart” able to ensure high performance.

Elea: essential style in different variants
Conceived with a clean and linear design, the Elea hood by Baraldi is a model for island or peninsula made in different sizes and aesthetic variants: from 116, 146 and 176 cm, and with the fireplace in the center or off-center to the right or left. The finishes available are in stainless steel or with scratch-resistant black or white paint. Furthermore, the Elea Glass version features a glass top and a stainless steel or black structure. The essential style is combined with advanced technologies: all Elea hoods are equipped with motors in A or A+ class to reduce consumption by up to 30%, with flow rates up to 900 m3/h. Recently, the company has also introduced the DryDrop version for all sizes, which integrates an anti-condensation system into the essential design of the product, especially useful when the hood is placed over an induction hob. When the system is activated, the perimeter panel of the appliance heats up to 55°C in a controlled manner, avoiding the creation of condensation. The residual steam entering the hood is stopped by a sponge filter.

The ultra-compact suction of Light

Falmec Light

Innovative technology applied to a light and contemporary design: the Light hood by Falmec is an island solution, designed to fit both in an independent space and “in dialogue” with the living area. What distinguishes this appliance are the geometric lines and the ultra-compact suction body, made possible by the new Multi-Air technology, developed by Falmec. This technology distributes the suction power, normally concentrated on a single motor, in several small motors, to guarantee the same suction efficiency in a reduced volume. Light is also characterized by a central element in tempered smoked glass (120 cm or 180 cm) and two lateral profiles in black anodized satin aluminum, which integrate LED strips able of spread the light along the entire lower perimeter of the two components.

Rules aligns with the wall units
Thanks to a mechanism that adjusts its depth, Rules by Elica (design Fabrizio Crisà) has a double “soul”: by reducing the thickness to a minimum, it almost disappears into the wall or, alternatively, it aligns perfectly with the depth of the wall units without discontinuity. Various finishes: black full glass, naked (can be paneled with the same door as the wall units) and Dekton Nero Sirius.

Inside Out “disappears” into the ceiling
It is a hood equipped with advanced technologies, associated with minimal lines. Inside Out by Sirius (design Giacomo Fava) is activated by remote control and descends from the ceiling allowing the extraction of cooking vapors, then hiding again at the end of the use.

In the kitchen environment, the choice of materials is important both at a functional and aesthetic level. This is true for furniture as well as for household appliances, with innovative proposals that make it possible to offer consumers a variety of solutions and greater customization.

by Elena Corti

Research on materials allows to explore new possibilities, offering ideas for future developments. In particular, in the field of synthetic and hybrid materials, proposals are multiplying, even with applications in the world of kitchen. To understand in what direction research is moving, we interviewed the director of Materioteca, Diana Castiglione. Materioteca is a structure born to create connections among the world of research, designers and companies. It carries out a technical-scientific dissemination activity (largely free of charge) on synthetic materials and in its Milanese headquarters it hosts a permanent exhibition with samples and objects capable of capturing the sensoriality of materials. In addition, upon request, it also organizes exhibitions outside its headquarters (for years, for example, it has collaborated with Senaf, the organizer of MecSpe fair).

Diana Castiglione, director of Materioteca. (photo Giuseppe Secreti)

As far as kitchen environment is concerned, where is research on materials orienting?
There are trends in place that also affect materials. First of all, kitchen has changed a lot in the last few years and that change has accelerated recently. From an aesthetic point of view, this environment has passed from being a space in which every element contributed to express the concept of cleanliness (as if kitchen were a sort of candid and white “operating room”) to becoming a place of “refuge” “. This resulted in a change in the choice of colors which became darker. Furthermore, kitchen environment tends to occupy a larger space and merge with living room. In addition, on the front of household appliances, the transition from gas to induction cooking is underway. In the field of materials, this has led to a great proliferation of solutions, so much so that it is difficult to report a single trend. Tendentially we see the abandonment of the most classic materials and the multiplication of hybrid materials (ie materials consisting of an organic and an inorganic part). There is a considerable variety of “solid surfaces”: from softer materials (because the inorganic part is softer) to those that withstand abrasion better because the inorganic part contains quartz, for example. These materials, then, allow for multiple color variations, even if the shades that currently dominate are anthracite and gray. It is a trend due to the fact that generally these are kitchens sold in a global market: “non-colors” have a more universal language than stronger colors that can be perceived differently according to local cultures.

Nowadays people talk a lot about air purification: is there any innovation regarding materials?
I can cite the example of the Plados Telma Group, which produces sinks and home appliances. We have collaborated with them and of we exhibit one of their products right in the permanent exhibition of Materioteca. The Group, which includes the Delta company (dedicated to R&D and production of materials), has developed the AriaPura technology, currently applied to sinks and hobs. It is based on the addition of a catalyst in the composite material which, in addition of being suitable for contact with food, is also able to interact with the kitchen environment, reducing air pollution. Specifically, this material contains anatase titanium dioxide in nanometric dimensions: the light (natural or artificial) triggers a photocatalytic process thanks to which the air is purified, the surfaces are disinfected from molds, fungi, yeasts and bacteria and the organic molecules, including which of the air (source of odors), are decomposed. The Plados Telma Group is an innovative Italian company: in addition to AriaPura technology, it has also created a range of sinks made with 100% recycled materials.

Sustainability is among the most current issues: in the field of kitchen products, and in particular in household appliances, is the use of recycled materials a promising way?
The topic of recycled materials is certainly interesting and, as far as synthetic and hybrid ones are concerned, I could know some innovative solutions, even if not directly related to the household appliances sector, but which can still represent an interesting hint. I am thinking, for example, of the materials obtained from Krill Design, a reality that creates circular economy projects and eco-design products starting from food waste. Using coffee grounds and squeezed orange peels, Krill Design has created new generation biopolymers, with which different types of furnishing objects can be 3D printed. I believe this is an exciting path that can open up new possibilities in the field of hybrid materials.

Another important issue for the kitchen environment and appliances is the ease of cleaning the surfaces: what is research working on in this area?

A lot of research is being done on self-cleaning materials. For example, there are studies concerning the lotus flower leaf because it has a structure that is self-cleaning. In practice, when a drop of water falls on it, it does not remain stationary on the leaf but rolls and drags away with it the impurities it intercepts. By being able to reproduce this type of structure, a surface could be obtained that can be easily cleaned only with water, without the need for detergents. The ‘lotus effect’ is already being studied and applied to the exterior of buildings (glass and front panels) but it could also be interesting in other areas.

Does research on materials contribute to product innovation?
Research on materials generally goes hand in hand with the discovery of new technologies. Let’s think about induction for hobs or microwaves for ovens: research applied on materials has evolved together with new technologies.

The choices of appliance manufacturers
Kitchen appliances, just for the environment in which they operate, must guarantee solidity, resistance to scratches, stains, wear and high temperatures, as well as hygiene, ease of cleaning and aesthetics capable of integrate itself with furniture and satisfy consumers’ tastes in terms of shapes, colors and style. In all this materials play a significant role and, among the different types of appliances, hoods are among the products that have been the object of the greatest innovations. Elica, for example, offers several interesting solutions. “Today kitchen is the place that, more than any other domestic environment, represents the style of people who live it – explains Fabrizio Crisà, Elica Design Director -. In this scenario, when designing new products the choice of material plays a fundamental role in both aesthetic and functional terms. Metal and glass are certainly the most common materials on our products and are used in many forms: steel, aluminum, treated or painted metals, transparent or silk-screened glass alongside ceramics. In the last two years, the use of black has established itself strongly, tendentially with a soft matte finish. Outside of the so-called “standard” materials, I always try to introduce materials in line with the trends of kitchens and furnishings in general. The Open Suite model is an example of this: it has an architectural structure designed to be more than a hood, but rather an innovative piece of furniture, out of the ordinary, which does not exist in the furniture scene. A modular system of elements that can give life to infinite compositions. A metallic structure, soft matte black, combined with elements with cast iron effect and shelves in various materials: wood with canaletto walnut finish, metal mesh, compact metal, extra-clear or smoked glass and finally the possibility of customizing shelves at will.”

“The aesthetic part of a material – Crisà adds – is undoubtedly very important because it is what characterizes a product. In the case of household appliances, it must be taken into account that they will be placed in kitchens with different styles, colors and finishes; therefore search for materials that offer versatility and integration is fundamental to obtain stylistic homogeneity. On some of the latest models I have designed, such as Rules and Bloom-S, I have chosen Dekton black Sirius, a material that is generally used for the realization of kitchen tops. Aesthetics, resistance to wear, scratches and high temperatures make Dekton a perfect material for hoods. I chose the most common finish on the market to offer the possibility of having the “total look” in the kitchen. In other cases, such as for the Haiku hood, I chose white Krion with a silk effect, a material with extraordinary surface characteristics, regenerable, but above all antibacterial thanks to the photocatalysis that is activated with natural light. In the case of Bio and Lullaby, the use of aged oak gives products that warm and romantic taste, evoking those pleasant sensations to the touch that only wood can give. In other cases it is the shape that dictates the choice, as for the Ye hood, made of Cristalplant, a solid surface that is cold injection molded. In recent years, the desire for customization has grown a lot to have products adapting to personal needs and that can be unique. For this reason I have designed appliances such as Illusion, Rules and the GetUp which, in the “naked” versions, leave the choice of covering material to the user.” Elica focuses very much on research as a way to innovate, exploring new possibilities also in terms of materials. “Continuous research and a vocation for innovation are part of Elica’s DNA and, as a designer, I am constantly looking for new ideas that often involve the use of original materials – Crisà says -. Unfortunately, in the world of household appliances and in particular of kitchen hoods, the choice is very limited because all materials must have specific functional and mechanical characteristics, as well as resistance to high temperatures, vapors, scratches and stains. Elica uses an internal laboratory, EPL (Elica Propulsion Laboratory), a state-of-the-art and certified center at European level, able to carry out all types of tests to guarantee and approve the characteristics of the materials we use, in line with the most stringent regulations about it.”

“I believe that for a designer it is crucial to have a deep knowledge of materials, transformation techniques, innovations and continuous evolutions. This allows us to realize what was unthinkable until the day before" (Fabrizio Crisà, Elica)
Soft Edge wall-mounted hood by Faber, made with Fenix coating.

Still in the hood sector, the choice of Faber-Franke Home Solutions consists in proposing “traditional” quality materials and at the same time doing research, experimenting with new solutions such as Fenix. “Hood plays an extremely important role in the kitchen and must win a great challenge every day – declares Giorgio Grassi, Head of Global Category Management Hoods at Franke Home Solutions -. On the one hand to characterize and enrich the aesthetics of the environment, on the other to guarantee appropriate performance. It is an appliance subjected to continuous stress – especially if activated in intensive mode -, it must withstand high temperatures and humidity and maintain its functionality over time. The growing tendency to open kitchen to the living room has transformed hood in a decorative element of great impact. Hence our choice of making products with “precious” materials, such as stainless steel and glass, and at the same time investing in R&D. An example is Franke Mythos, a vertical crystal hood characterized by graphic elements and patterns able to make the product a real central design element inside the kitchen, which does not require any compromise in the performance of suction and purification of the air. Equally innovative is the Soft Line by Faber, made of Fenix, able to integrate perfectly with the design of furniture and wall units made more and more frequently with this material, that guarantees an absolutely unique touch & feel, as well as extraordinary performance in terms of resistance to wear, scratches and high temperatures.” The company invests in innovation and also has collaborations with the university world and with external laboratories. “We constantly invest in the search for innovative materials that are not only capable of guaranteeing very high standards of quality and resistance, but that are able to support the promise of the brand. This stands as a design, technological, sophisticated brand and able to satisfy the multiple needs in terms of style and functionality – Grassi explains -. All this means, on the one hand distinguishing ourselves, on the other reassuring consumer that he will be able to identify the right product in our range that will contribute to a harmonious and balanced design result. We continue to work on existing materials, in particular steel and plastic ones, to increase their ductility and performance. To this aim, it becomes essential to invest to improve coatings and surface treatments, with particular focus on nano-coating; this is for increasing the resistance to scratches, abrasions and high temperatures but also for improving the ease of cleaning and the aesthetic result, while maintaining the finishes and colors unchanged over time. Another area that sees us busy is that of colors. In particular, our commitment is aimed at significantly reducing the use of paints – substances with a high rate of pollution – in favor of alternative treatments capable of maintaining full production flexibility and perfect aesthetic result.”

“The Franke group stands out for its high rate of investment in innovation, a central development asset also for Franke Home Solutions division and our range of hoods. A constant commitment that we carry out both within the company and through collaboration with third parties, starting with some prestigious Italian universities including the Milan Polytechnic and the University of Siena. In the development of new materials, on the other hand, we collaborate with external certified laboratories, concentrating the activities of analysis and testing of the various solutions - for example the evaluation of the resistance of materials or the resistance of colors over time - within our Italian and Swiss laboratories recognized as 'avant-garde’ ones" (Giorgio Grassi, Franke Home Solutions)
Baraldi proposes the combination of Lumina hood and Elegant hob, both in the Luxor version with an elegant golden stripe underlining the controls.
"Our research goes towards new declinations and combinations of style, color and finish for induction hobs also with matching hood, to go beyond the standard of the black induction hob - the one that can be seen extending to infinity in large appliance shops, making it impossible to differentiate at a glance; the market offer from a stylistic point of view is very compact and uniform” (Lorenzo Baraldi, Baraldi)

Another company in the hood sector committed to innovation is Baraldi, which is focusing on finishes. “We are studying new applications of materials to obtain metallic finishes not yet used in the world of household appliances – explains Lorenzo Baraldi, co-owner of the company -. The production of these new finishes has a reduced environmental impact compared to previous productions and allows us to be at the forefront with respect to the design of standard appliances.” Furthermore, Baraldi is working to renew the style of the induction hob. In fact, it is often difficult to differentiate these products (mostly black and with a similar design), so the company focuses on new combinations of style, color and finish (also in terms of matching with hood) to overcome uniformity which generally characterizes induction hobs. The company also collaborates with external realities to carry out its research activity. “We are pushing to explore unconventional areas in the combination of materials – Lorenzo Baraldi concludes -. For this reason, our internal research and development office collaborates with specialized companies and is carrying out projects in various sectors, including 3D metal printing. Consumer’s purchasing choices are changing towards a more inclusive and open use of kitchen space, where kitchen becomes an area less isolated from the rest of the house than the traditional floor plan (by now it is often in communication with living room, to create a large, open and bright living area). With this in mind, cutting-edge materials and particular combinations are required to customize and coordinate the appliances in order to guarantee a studied glance.”
If aesthetics is certainly a central theme when we speak about materials applied to hoods, no less important is the issue of sustainability.

“Hive and Link are part of the collection of kitchen hoods made in collaboration with the city of Deruta. Every single piece is created entirely by hand by the master ceramists of the Umbrian town, renowned all over the world for the fine workmanship of ceramics. Despite the unlimited potential of the material, however, industrial designers have always considered ceramic a material that belonged more to sculptors, and - apart from sanitary ware - there are few examples of ceramic applications to produce industrial forms. The curiosity to experiment with new languages in a purely industrial environment such as that of household appliances has pushed us further. It pushed us to break down the boundaries between art/craft and industry. We have created objects with a technological soul which, despite being mass-produced, maintain the typical characteristics of a single piece." (Giacomo Fava, Sirius)

Sirius, for example, focuses heavily on this aspect, choosing solutions that combine beauty and respect for the environment. «Research on materials is fundamental for our company – says Giacomo Fava, Creative Director of Sirius -. We conceive a product by taking care of its entire life cycle: conception, design, sale, use, not neglecting disposal once its function is exhausted. We believe it is necessary to think of new objects in a circular economy perspective, minimizing waste and planning to reuse materials in subsequent production cycles. A material that is aesthetically beautiful and with performing technical characteristics, but which cannot be easily recycled, is not a good material for us. On the other hand, a material that manages to find the right balance among aesthetics, technology, feasibility and that has the possibility of being reused in a subsequent production cycle is an excellent material for us. Ceramic, for example is a material which can be easily recycled, besides being an extraordinary material, with unique aesthetic, physical and mechanical properties allowing it to be used in the most incredible and advanced applications (even in extreme environments such as the Space Shuttle coatings).” Sirius also underlines the importance of doing research by dealing with realities outside the company. “There is no innovation without research – Fava says -. We are aware that in the globalized world in which we live, in order to be competitive on the market it is necessary to innovate. From the early stages of the project we create a multidisciplinary team to create a dialogue among the various sectors of the company, sometimes making use of external collaborators. From dialogue and, in some cases, from the “contrast” between different realities, new ideas are born which will then lead to new products.”

Urbantech gas hob by Fulgor Milano with matt brass burners.

For many Made in Italy companies, then, research on materials is combined with high craftsmanship, the result of a wide know-how in the processing field. Among these Fulgor Milano, a brand that produces different types of kitchen appliances and that combines quality materials, attention to design, craftsmanship and technology. “For us the choice of materials has always been linked to the design of our appliances, the sustainability of their production and the availability of materials on an industrial scale – Paolo Mainardi, Brand Manager of Fulgor Milano, explains -. For example, today we are working with types of steels that can be treated with opaque or bright colors; in the near future, design will be increasingly correlated with the encounter among high craftsmanship, sustainable materials and technology. As far as Fulgor Milano is concerned, the activity of our R&D is always aimed at offering solutions combining the industrial production cycle with the craftsmanship of some details, all to satisfy the wishes of the most aware and sophisticated consumers: such as the white glass ceramic surfaces (CeraWhite) or the textures on the black glass ceramic surfaces (CeraBlack), the use of glossy and opaque brass for the gas burners and AISI 316 stainless steel for our products intended for outdoor use.”

"Research on materials is one of the many aspects of product development which we deepen with our best national and foreign suppliers at the beginning of the design phase of our new models. The professionalism gained by these industries in the search for innovative solutions allows us to make proposals that otherwise would have no chance of being born, given the huge investments required" (Paolo Mainardi, Fulgor Milano)

Bertazzoni too can count on a long experience in the production of kitchen appliances (from Cooking to Cooling, etc.) and on a vast expertise in the treatment of materials and in combining technology and craftsmanship to meet the needs of end users. “Over the last few years kitchen has become a more convivial place, with solutions increasingly similar to those that once belonged to the living room – Valentina Bertazzoni, Head of Style and Communication at Bertazzoni, underlines -. For the kitchen space, the heart of the house, an increasingly widespread attention to detail and personalization emerges. Bertazzoni carries out a continuous search for the highest quality of functional materials such as steel, glass and cast iron, as well as the distinctive materials to characterize products. In fact, the company proposes to the most demanding users four special finishes inspired by the excellence of the industrial and artisan tradition that made Italy internationally famous for the creation of refined and distinctive kitchens: Metals, Automotive Paints, Enamels, Embossed Paints. Each Bertazzoni special finish is the result of in-depth research and is designed to best interpret the personal style in the kitchen. Furthermore, for each series of the brand (Professional, Modern, Heritage, Master) a complete suite of appliances with a coordinated design is available.” Going deeper in the details of the choices made by the Emilian manufacturer in the field of materials, Valentina Bertazzoni highlights how the company has always focused on the research of materials linked to the functional part of the kitchen environment and at the same time on that dedicated to style.” As for the first – the manager explains – our attention is focused on improving performance and resistance to wear: Bertazzoni appliances are made mainly of stainless steel, minimizing the use of plastic and non-recyclable materials. Materials used for the products structure are selected to maintain their integrity when they come into contact with the main common substances in the kitchen. An increasingly important functional aspect is also that linked to cleaning and hygiene: our research is constant in this field as well, as in the case of the fully removable aluminum and glass drawers of our new refrigerator column (recently presented in Italy at the Fuorisalone in Milan). They are treated with crystal powder to eliminate any porosity, obtaining the best antibacterial solution, ensuring the safe storage of each food and the long life of the appliance. As for our search for innovative materials to create a distinctive design, Bertazzoni metal finishes are applied by expert hands on the decorative elements of the Modern Series built-in ovens. For the freestanding kitchens and the bult-in ovens of the Professional Series, a special paint finish is available using the same process used for the Italian luxury sports cars. Bertazzoni Heritage Series, then, is inspired by the original wood stoves that Antonio and Napoleone Bertazzoni built in the 1930s: already at that time the enamelling process made the first kitchens unique objects. Furthermore, automotive paints have a palette made up of bright and classic colors, with a glossy or matte finish: all are made by industrial bodiworks companies specialized in the sector.”

"Research on new materials is continuous: our choice is to collaborate constantly with our suppliers or identify new ones to pursue the maximum innovation together, in the name of the perfect combination with technology and Made in Italy design that distinguish our company globally. We are very proud of our numerous collaborations in this field: it is as if we had created a large "extended laboratory", a Bertazzoni Lab in which the different realities (Bertazzoni internal development team, designers and external suppliers) contribute, with their own skills and creative ideas, to carry out a process of innovation and research that never stops. Our best solutions are the result of a common creative project. Such as, for example, the metallic finishes of the Modern Series: every aspect of the process is done manually, following traditional methods, with results that make our appliances as unique as works of art, which tell all the skill and expertise of those who created them. "(Valentina Bertazzoni, Bertazzoni)
Grundig: a nylon-based compound from the recycling of fishing nets
Using recycled materials to produce new objects is highly topical issue which is linked to the important subject of sustainability. A significant example in this direction is that of Grundig, that obtains material for the construction of components for ovens from disused fishing nets. “Technological innovation with respect of the planet resources is what has always characterized our path - Michela Lucchesini, Marketing Manager of Grundig Italy, explains -. We at Grundig want to be the spokesperson for a new culture of responsibility, which embraces the word "respect" in all its nuances (respect for environmental, food, social resources) as the center of any improvement action and which starts from home - in line with our claim ‘It starts at home’-. We pursue sustainability through a concrete approach, a virtuous design and a circular production, which is fulfilled in our appliances and technical features. It is not just a question of designing high quality appliances that meet the highest energy saving standards or that minimize water consumption; it is a question of implementing solutions and innovations that make it possible to limit ‘hot’ problems at a global level. Our production philosophy is based on the concepts of circular economy and upcycling, which sees waste as a great resource to be recovered and transformed. Old fishing nets, which pollute the sea and trap marine animals, find an alternative life with us by becoming components for ovens. Every year several tons of fishing nets and lines are lost in the sea: by transforming them, together with industrial textile waste, we have created a nylon-based compound with mechanical strength and thermal resistance for the production of some parts of the oven. With this in mind, 65 tons of fishing nets were recovered and reused in 2018. Not only that, we increasingly use bioplastics in the aesthetic and functional components of our appliances (such as dryer chassis, plastics applied to dishwasher baskets)."
Lapitec Chef, the invisible hob

Product innovation is also born thanks to the use of innovative materials, as demonstrated by Lapitec Chef, an induction cooking system hidden under the sintered stone kitchen top. This is a new solution, patented by Lapitec (the company that launched the homonymous material consisting of 100% natural sintered stone) and developed in collaboration with the University of Padua for the electrothermal part. The operation of Lapitec Chef is simple: by positioning the special silicone pad on the hob, the touch controls are activated allowing the system, with two or four burners, to be switched. In the absence of the pad, however, the induction hob and its controls are inactive: the kitchen top therefore remains free, distinguished only by a display and small engravings. Furthermore, Lapitec is not porous, is non-absorbent and is resistant to chemical agents. And the cooking pad, apparently a normal silicone mat, is actually an appliance, equipped with magnetic sensors and a hidden coil. It is compatible with induction pots and is dishwasher safe, as well as allowing operation in bridge and childlock mode.
The dishwasher with Microban Antimicrobial Technology

Combining materials with appropriate treatments can allow to give the surfaces of the products antimicrobial properties. GE Appliances recently presented the GE Profile UltraFresh System dishwasher integrateing Microban Antimicrobial Technology, a special surface treatment allowing to reduce bacterial proliferation, particularly in the points that are most frequently touched (such as handle, control panel, baskets, in addition to the filtration system). The product was born from the collaboration with Microban International, a specialist in the production of antimicrobial additives and odor control solutions.
Research on materials also in the Sda sector
Research on materials does not only concern large kitchen appliances but also small domestic ones (Sda), where the use of new solutions can contribute, for example, to increasing the practicality of the product. As in the case of R.G.V. which has chosen to use Tritan for some components of its slicers so that they can be washed in the dishwasher. “Most of our slicers - explains Marco Di Leo, CEO of the company - are made of aluminum, a material that guarantees product stability and quality. However, to offer end users more and more advantages in terms of ease of cleaning and ease of use, our choices on materials also include new alloys derived from plastics, such as Tritan, or chromed plastics that allow us to have components that can be washed in the dishwasher avoiding consumer to wash by hand." As regards research on new materials, R.G.V. collaborates with external suppliers who interface with the company's technical office.

The most modern kitchen appliances are designed to simplify users’ lives by speeding up the various operations taking place in this environment, so as to obtain good results without having to spend too much time on the most complex and tiring activities.

by Elena Corti

When we think of kitchen appliances, we generally associate the concept of saving with the fact of consuming less energy and less water. But savings are not only these ones: the latest generation devices also allow you to use less time and effort, speeding up operations and making them simpler, while maintaining high performance. This allows users to have more time for themselves, because thanks to technology everything ca be done quickly and better, debunking the old proverb saying that “soon and well cannot be together”.

Thanks to the QuickPowerWash program, the new G 7160 SCVi dishwasher by Miele allows to wash a normally dirty load in just 58 minutes. In addition, the machine allows a flexible management of spaces (MultiFlex 3D cutlery drawer, ComfortPlus lower and upper basket) in order to stow dishes in the best possible way, reducing the number of necessary washes.

Little free time is one of the themes most felt by consumers due to the often frenetic lifestyles and home appliances manufacturers have developed various solutions to make these products evolved tools capable of making daily life really simpler, speeding up the necessary domestic activities and automating processes as much as possible. In the field of dishwashers, for example, there are models equipped with a rapid cycle that allows to have the load clean in just an hour. Furthermore, the presence of the program dedicated to crystals means that it is no longer necessary to take the time to wipe the glasses with a cloth in order to remove residual stains. Another useful aid is the possibility to customize the internal set up of the dishwasher thanks to adjustable baskets, third basket and a more effective organization of the space: all this makes the appliance adaptable to any need and allows to reduce the number of washes, saving the loading and unloading time because the dishes are stowed better so that more pieces can be put in the machine in the same cycle.

As for washing machines, there are products equipped with more than one rapid cycle with different times (for example cycles of 14, 30 and 44 minutes) to quickly refresh garments that are not too dirty so that they are cleaned quickly. Furthermore, washing machines that have a steam function allow the fibers of the garments to be stretched, thus reducing subsequent ironing times. Further innovations are also the washing machines with double basket that allow to do two laundry at once (for example white clothes and colored ones) and the models in which it is possible to insert garments even when the cycle has started: in case the user has forgotten to introduce some clothes, it is no longer necessary to wait to do a new wash cycle. Refrigerators also offer fast features like super freeze and super cool to speed up the timing when you need to cool food quickly. In addition, the No-frost technology avoids having to waste time defrosting the freezer.

The Candy Smart Steam Wifi steam oven can also be managed remotely, finding it already at the right temperature when returning home, without having to wait for the time to heat up. This product can also be controlled by voice and, thanks to the Candy simply-Fi app, it allows to choose among more than 200 recipes. Smart Steam ovens guarantee quick and effortless cleaning through two possible systems: Aquactiva (which uses steam) and pyrolysis.

On the cooking front, then, ovens and hobs do not lack tools to do quickly and well. The latest generation ovens, for example, are equipped with rapid pre-heating to reach the desired temperature more quickly; in addition, the possibility of multilevel cooking allows you to prepare different dishes at the same time without mixing odors. There are also models designed with a special function that allows to cook 2 standard pizzas in less than 3 minutes, cooking them in a similar way to what would happen with a wood oven, and steam appliances that have a Turbo function (designed for lovers of classic pizza with a thin and crisp base), which guarantees fast cooking of the dough thanks to a combination of high temperature, heat coming from below and homogeneous ventilation.

Thanks to the Pizza function, the FCLPO 6215 P TEM BK oven by Fulgor Milano cooks 2 standard pizzas in less than 3 minutes at the optimum temperature of 350 °C. In addition, it allows multi-level cooking and rapid heating to quickly reach the chosen temperature. It also has a self-cleaning system for pyrolysis and automatic cooking with pre-selected and editable recipe book.

Again with regard to steam ovens, the water refilling operation is also rapid thanks to mechanisms that allow the tank to be removed and filled without interrupting the cooking program. A further innovation that can be found in some models of advanced ovens is the automatic rapid cooling: in practice the product door opens and closes with a motor device, letting the heat out so that cooking stops and the desired degree is not exceeded. And with some products, then, the interaction is very fast thanks to the fact that the household appliance integrates a proximity sensor: just get closer and the cooking compartment immediately lights up or the display is activated.
Other types of appliances that allow you to cook while saving time are ovens combined with microwaves, which take advantage of this cooking method to speed up the food preparation process. Finally, as far as real microwaves are concerned, there are models that, in addition to defrosting and cooking in a short time, are built in such a way that a powerful flow of hot air is blown directly on food through a series of holes to even faster and more uniform cooking. With regard to hobs, then, induction products are generally equipped with the Booster function to immediately obtain maximum power so as to reduce cooking times to a minimum. Moreover, some models have automatic programs such as the one to bring a liter of water to the boil in just 3 minutes. A further saving of time is then guaranteed by the hobs that automatically connect to the hood adjusting the adequate suction level by themselves to eliminate fumes and odors: it is therefore no longer necessary for the user to perform this operation manually. As for the gas hobs, models that include triple ring burners allow to cook faster: the three concentric rings guarantee high flame power and distribute the heat evenly both in the center and in the most external parts of the pots (even of large dimensions). Finally, a mention of hoods and hobs with integrated extractor system: the intensive mode (or even in some products double intensive) increases the suction power, quickly eliminating even the most persistent odors.

GFP93IX multifunction oven by Glem Gas. It is equipped with the PRH function allowing to quickly pre-heat the appliance. The product reaches 200°C in a few minutes, thus reducing the total cooking time. Furthermore, among its functions there is the special Pizza program which allows to cook pizzas at exactly the same temperature as a wood oven, quickly and evenly.

In the kitchen, however, it is not only large appliances that save time and effort. Even small appliances integrate functions and accessories capable of speeding up operations with excellent results. The kitchen robot, for example, allow you to work quickly with different types of ingredients. Thanks to blades, whisks, hooks, discs and planetary movement, the user can quickly cut, slice, grate, emulsify, whip and knead. The most modern models have a real sets of accessories: alongside the more classic tools, some manufacturers offer accessories derived from the professional world, designed for those who love to experiment in the kitchen, such as pasta cutters, dough sheeters, meat mincers and vegetable mixers. Again in the context of small household appliances, in addition to the food processor also the immersion blenders are more and more often equipped with some accessories to facilitate and speed up the preparation of food: for example, protection for pots, whip, graduated mixing jug and grinder. Another appliance that combines speed and quality is the automatic coffee machine: it heats up quickly and can dispense coffee and milk-based drinks in a very short time, simply by pressing a button. As for the capsule models, among the latest innovations there is the voice control to make interaction with the appliance even faster and more convenient. Finally, another appliance designed with a specific function to save time is the toaster: some products are in fact equipped with Fast Toasting to reduce toasting times.

Induction is a technology that guarantees quick cooking, allowing for example to boil water in a few minutes. The Whirlpool SMP 9010 C/NE /IXL hob is also equipped with automatic functions to make cooking operations even simpler and faster, with intelligent 6th SENSE sensors that detect and regulate the temperature of the pan according to the selected program and SmartSense Assisted Cooking (up to 63 cooking combinations).

Cleanining appliances in a faster and effortlessly way

The Air line by Faber includes V-Air vertical solution and V-Air Flat vertical solution. Both models are equipped with the Double Intensive function (which quickly eliminates cooking vapors and odors) and the K-Link function which, through a radio connection between the Faber hood and the Faber induction hob, automatically adjusts the suction power based on the selected cooking level.

One of the most tedious and tiring aspects of using a kitchen appliance is to clean it, whether it’s a large or small appliance. Manufacturers have particularly concentrated on this issue to find solutions that make this necessary but often long activity quicker and easier. The oven, for example, is one of the most difficult products to clean: among the latest innovations there are models with pyrolytic cleaning systems that reach very high temperatures to reduce dirt practically to ashes so to remove it quickly from the cooking compartment and clean the oven simply by wiping with a cloth. The hydrolytic cleaning system also allows you to speed up the maintenance of this appliance: this technology uses the power of steam to soften the dirt so that it can be removed in a short time and without too much effort. In the induction hobs, on the other hand, the smooth surface is designed to make cleaning a quick and easy operation, while in other kitchen appliances (such as some models of dishwashers and coffee machines) the programs of self-cleaning keep the appliances efficient without the user have to spend too much time for this activity. Finally, with regard to small household appliances in particular, one of the aspects that could discourage the use of these products in the past is precisely the fact of having to take time to clean them. Today the presence of systems such as the Reverse function of the extractors and the opportunity to wash most of the accessories in the dishwasher make the care of these appliances much more practical and quick.

Many are the accessories of the KitchenAid Artisan food processor, capable of making food preparations faster and easier. For example, the set that includes a dough sheeter and two stainless steel pasta cutters for precise and smooth cutting of the dough. In addition, the robot includes a vegetable slicer/grater with 3 interchangeable blades and a 2 in 1 pestle (it slices and chops fruit and vegetables of any diameter), the meat grinder and the vegetable mill.

Less time and fewer errors with the automatic programs
Many state-of-the-art appliances have a large number of automatic programs to guide the user so that he does not "get lost in attempts", automating processes as much as possible so as to obtain the best result in the shortest possible time and with the least effort. Whether it is cooking or taking care of clothes or dishes, the wide variety of automatic programs simplifies the user's life by reducing the timing of the activities taking place in the kitchen. The setting of the various functions is easy and fast thanks to the intuitive and user-friendly displays.
Connectivity saves time
Finding the oven already hot when you return home or the laundry already done so to be able to dry clothes immediately: the connected appliances offer the possibility of managing the appliances even remotely, saving precious time so that the end user can devote himself to other than household chores. Furthermore, the opportunities offered by the connection with the various apps allow for example to access recipe books to quickly find ideas and suggestions for a lunch or dinner to be made at the last minute.
Baraldi's Diamond hob with Easy Lift system
The Diamond suction hobs line bt Baraldi integrates the Easy Lift system which allows immediate and easy cleaning. Thanks to two double pistons, the glass of the hob rises completely and remains in position allowing to easily clean any food residues or liquids that have fallen into the area below. The hob then closes smoothly without the risk of accidental fall.

Easy Clean system to speed up the slicer cleaning
R.G.V. has conceived the Easy Clean system to clean the slicer quickly and easily. This solution allows the plate of the appliance to be tilted so that cleaning the cutting area is more convenient and faster. In addition, the food holder with removable and dishwasher safe finger protection makes cleaning futher quick.

The household appliances available on the market are now extremely efficient and equipped with advanced technologies able to optimize the use of electricity, water, detergent and gas, as well as ensuring a low noise level.

by Elena Corti

Kitchen appliances are increasingly “savers” and eco-sustainable, ensuring a more efficient use of resources, which translates into a reduction in consumption and a lower impact on the environment. The development of advanced technologies today allows household appliances to use less energy, water and gas, improving the sustainability of products and lightening the burden of bills without, however, lowering the level of performance. The introduction of the new energy label (which entered into force in March 2021 for dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers, wine cellars, washing machines and washer-dryers) shows how these appliances have now reached such a level of efficiency as to require the rescaling of the energy classes to make it easier to compare products, enhancing the effort made by companies in terms of innovation and reduction of consumption and waste. In the near future, the new labeling will also be extended to ovens and hoods.

Saving of electricity, water and detergent

The Samsung 8500 series dishwashers, in B or C class according to the new labeling, have 8 washing programs + 4 downloadable programs (among the programs available also Extra Silence and Eco). In addition, they feature automatic door opening and a Self Clean program for self-cleaning of the interior without detergents. They are also connectable to the SmartThings app.

Today, washing dishes, glasses and kitchen utensils with a dishwasher is advisable compared to the hand wash, thanks to technologies that allow you to avoid waste and optimize resources. The latest generation dishwashers are equipped with programs which, thanks to the presence of sensors, automatically recognize the load, detecting the level of dirt, and consequently adjust the parameters and settings of the washing cycle to guarantee the best result without wasting electricity and water. Also with regard to the detergent dosage, the most advanced models have solutions to ensure that the machine itself automatically adjusts the quantity of detergent to use based on actual need. The appliances with self-dosing system in fact have a tank for the detergent that is taken directly from the machine, independently calibrating the most suitable quantity for the type of washing. Furthermore, the most recent dishwashers are equipped with the Eco program, which balances time, energy and water in order to obtain the best results with the lowest environmental impact, optimizing the use of resources as much as possible. In the energy label, the values indicated are based precisely on the use of this program: the energy consumption of the dishwasher is in fact indicated based on 100 operating cycles with the Eco program and also the water consumption is determined considering an operating cycle with this program. Moreover, a novelty of the new energy label is that the duration of the Eco cycle is also made explicit.

In addition to what has already been mentioned, there are other solutions in the name of efficiency and savings, such as the automatic switch-off of the dishwasher (preventing it from staying on more than necessary), the automatic opening of the door at the end of the washing for drying naturally without wasting energy and the cycle that allows you to clean even the most stubborn dirt without prewashing or pre-treating dishes by hand thanks to powerful jets of water directed in such a way as to obtain maximum washing intensity. Then there are models allowing connection to hot water produced for example by solar panels (so as to exploit the potential of renewable energy) and devices equipped with internal Led lights that guarantee full visibility with low consumption. Furthermore, a strategic component for dishwashers is the inverter motor, which ensures energy efficiency and silence. Finally, there are dishwashers that allow you to view the consumption of water and electricity directly from the control panel, thus having a simple and immediate way to monitor the used resources.

In addition to the dishwasher, washing machine is also often placed in the kitchen. The energy efficiency of this appliance has come to exceed the A+++ class of the old energy label. Today models that reach the A class of the new labeling are already available, demonstrating the results obtained by manufacturers in looking for highly efficient solutions in terms of energy consumption. In addition, as for dishwashers, even the latest generation washing machines have systems able to self-dose detergent and water, and programs whose washing parameters are automatically adjusted according to the type of fabric and the degree of soiling of the laundry. Furthermore, with the new energy label, the Eco 40-60 program has become the reference for determining the consumption: as regards electricity in particular, the value expressed in kWh on the label is based on 100 washing cycles with this program, which is considered to be the most efficient in terms of energy and water use. With regard to the engine, even for washing machines the use of inverter motors ensures efficiency and silence (with models that reach the A class of noise). And there are products in which the movements of the basket have been studied to obtain a more uniform distribution of the water in the tank, in order to make washing faster and with better performance. Finally, as for the dishwasher, among washing machines devices are available that allow you to control the consumption of water and electricity.

Whirlpool Supreme Silence contains all the most advanced technologies of the brand (such as 6 ° SENSO, WaterSave and AutoDose), saving energy, water and detergent. Furthermore, it reaches only 65 dba in the spinning, obtaining the A class in terms of noise. It features Zen lateral sound-absorbing panels and ZenMotor engine, which help to minimize vibration and noise propagation. The Supreme Silence W8 model is in A class and energy efficiency.

Refrigerators: efficient and without dispersion
Refrigerators equipped with the most advanced technologies provide the best solutions for storing food, while ensuring reduced consumption. These appliances are efficient and some models are already available reaching the A class according to the new energy label. Reduced energy consumption is important for this type of household appliances, which remain on 24 hours a day and therefore weigh on the bill. The new generation models are equipped with components, technologies and functions that keep the temperature stable and avoid the dispersion of cold (for example, increasingly performing insulation and digital inverter compressor, which automatically adjusts its speed based on the actual need for cooling).

Hoover H-WASH 500 boasts the A class of the new energy label. It has an Eco-Power inverter motor and reduces waste to a minimum thanks to the Care Dose system, installed on some models in the range, which is able to dose the exact needed amount of water and detergent for washing, allowing you to complete 21 cycles without recharging. In addition, the device can be connected to the hOn app that allows management and monitoring remotely.

Furthermore, the No-frost technology prevents the formation of ice, which compromises the efficiency of the appliance, while the presence of the Eco function optimizes the operation of the appliance in the name of energy saving. To obtain the best performance without waste, the air circulation system is also fundamental, which keeps the internal temperature uniform and constant: in particular, some models of refrigerators are equipped with two independent cooling systems to ensure optimal conditions in each compartment. In addition, among the innovations for the efficiency of refrigerators there are, for example, products equipped with a ventilation system that also acts in the door area, keeping temperature fluctuations in this critical area under control. Another anti-dispersion solution are refrigerators with direct access drawers in the freezer area: instead of the classic freezer door there are sliding drawers, each of which can be opened directly from the outside. A further innovation are the appliances with the door equipped with a glass panel that lights up with two simple touches: it allows you to look inside the refrigerator without opening it in order to avoid dispersing cold.

Thanks to the LINEAR Cooling+ technology, the temperature in the LG Naturefresh refrigerator remains constantly uniform. Furthermore, the DOOR Cooling+ technology, working in synergy with LINEAR Cooling+, adds a further “control” through a ventilation vent positioned high up near the door: this ensures that the temperature remains stable even in the most critical point of the refrigerator.

Other tools that favor an anti-waste functioning of the appliance are, for example, the alarms that indicate if the door has been left open or if the temperature is too high. Moreover, the precise setting of the cold in the fridge and freezer compartments are displayed through the electronic controls. And as far as lighting is concerned, the presence of LEDs allows good visibility with reduced use of electricity. Finally, the latest generation refrigerators are not only appliances capable of guaranteeing low energy consumption but also a low noise level: this aspect was particularly highlighted in the new energy label with the introduction of the noise emission class (from A to D), which is added to the noise emission level expressed in dB.

Air is greener and greener in the kitchen

Falmec has developed the Green Tech technology, applied to Flipper, Move, Gruppo Incasso, Plane and Quasar models. These hoods are equipped with motors that use an electronic power control, optimally managing consumption in every phase of the operation. This contributes to the reduction of energy losses of the system, as well as the use of permanent magnets positioned on the rotor which reduce the energy absorption of the hood.

Breathing clean air free from cooking fumes and vapors does not necessarily mean having to consume a lot of electricity: in the field of kitchen appliances, in fact, hoods are among the appliances able to reach high standards of energy efficiency. The most modern versions guarantee high performance in terms of air suction with reduced electricity consumption. This is possible also thanks to highly efficient motors that ensure energy savings while maintaining a wide suction efficiency. There are hoods equipped with electronically controlled motors that maximize performance. Furthermore, the use of permanent magnets placed on the rotor allows to drastically reduce the absorption of energy by the extractor hood. Another important factor of the system, in terms of sustainability, is filtration. For example, washable and regenerable anti-odor filters are components that can last for years. The regeneration operation is simple: filters can be washed also in the dishwasher and then reactivated in the oven. Among the latest innovations there are long-life filters that combine activated carbon and zeolite, a mineral with a high capacity to absorb organic compounds and water vapor. Thanks to these characteristics, zeolite is able both to reduce bad smells and absorb cooking vapors. In terms of functions, for example, models are available that carry out a continuous air change for 24 hours and with minimum consumption and switch off automatically, in order to guarantee a healthy environment in the kitchen without impacting too much on the bill.
Another relevant element, when it comes to hoods, is lighting. In fact this appliance must guarantee the good visibility of the hob, but with attention to electricity consumption. For this reason, several models use LED lights, which combine the need to effectively illuminate the worktop with reduced electricity consumption. In addition, the LEDs are perfectly integrated into the structure of the hood. A final aspect to consider is that the most recent hoods combine low consumption with silence, one of the parameters highlighted by the energy label. The study of air flows, the use of innovative materials and silent motors have allowed brands to develop products capable of reducing noise to a minimum, while maintaining high suction performance.

Even cooking world looks to savings and efficiency

Elea by Baraldi combines high energy performance and attention to design. Thanks to the A+ class motor, the hood guarantees energy savings and also offers various customization possibilities (performance from 800 or 900 m3/h, different positions of the chimney, different aesthetic variants, different lengths).

In the kitchen, part of the energy consumption depends on the cooking appliances. In this segment too, manufacturers have worked to find solutions capable of avoiding waste and balancing the use of resources and performance. As for the hobs, in induction models the possibility of adjusting the appliance to numerous power levels (and also of using automatic programs) makes it easy for the user to precisely modulate the heat intensity in the various cooking zones so as not to use more electricity than the necessary. In addition, the presence of the power limiter allows you to adjust the power consumption. Another element to consider is that with induction the dispersion of energy is reduced to a minimum because the heat is generated directly on the bottom of the pan and only when this is in direct contact with the plate. In order to obtain an optimal functioning and no waste, in some models hob and hood can be connected so that the suction power is automatically adjusted on the basis of the selected cooking level. The user can also choose a suction hob, with very efficient solutions that combine hoods in A+++ class to the induction.
No less advanced are proposals relating to gas hobs, because also in this case, technological innovation has generated high-performance and efficient products. The most advanced models integrate systems to regulate the intensity of the flame on predefined levels, similar to what happens in induction hobs: in this way heat is controlled with great precision, avoiding the waste of gas. Furthermore, burner is the protagonist of efficiency in this type of product. There are models that exceed the energy efficiency standards required at European level, guaranteeing a reduction in cooking times and gas consumption. Other cost-effective and anti-waste solutions are burners with Dual control, which allow the two rings to work independently, so to make possible to use even only the smallest ring if great power is not required. Finally, gas hobs are available equipped with timers which, for each burner, allow you to set the desired cooking time after which the flame goes out automatically, avoiding the use of the appliance for longer than the needed time.

The Galileo NG suction hob by Faber boasts the A+++ class, providing high performance and low consumption. It has 4 induction areas with 2 Bridge Zones, touch slider controls to precisely adjust the cooking temperature as weel as the power of the hood, and an automatic suction setting system based on the cooking levels selected. In addition, it features a regenerable ceramic filter.

As for the ovens, the numerous innovations that distinguish the more advanced models contribute not to waste electricity and help to reduce heat loss. In terms of energy efficiency, there are products that exceed the A class and have functions to manage the cooking process with great precision, helping to optimize the use of the oven. Thanks to the automatic programs, in fact, the oven independently adjusts the parameters without having to manually set the type of heating, the duration or the temperature: in this way the used energy is only the needed one. Some products then allow the exploitation of residual heat: in practice, the appliance switches off before the end of the process and finishes cooking using the heat that remains in the cavity. Furthermore, very important for the efficiency of the oven is the air circulation: the ventilated models are particularly efficient because they allow a uniform distribution of heat. In addition, a relevant factor to avoid dispersion is the good visibility of the cavity so as not to have to open the appliance several times to check the food: for this purpose, the use of LED lights allows to adequately illuminate the various shelves with a low consumption of electricity, moreover the models with integrated camera allow you to control the food in the oven even remotely directly from your mobile phone. Finally, an innovation that makes ovens more efficient is represented by the possibility of dividing the cavity of the appliance into two parts and using only the upper part: energy consumption is reduced, as well as preparation time. A final mention is dedicated to freestanding cookers, because these products also present solutions in the name of efficiency and energy saving. In particular, there are models that exceed the A class and that are equipped with high efficiency burners.

The ST965MI cooker by Glem Gas is in A+ class. The hob with 5 burners includes a central 4 kW HP•C burner which ensures high efficiency and lower consumption. In addition, the appliance has a thermo-ventilated electric multifunction oven: the internal cavity without joints is designed in a single block to ensure uniform temperature and energy efficiency, as well as ease of cleaning.
Check consumption with the app
Today, many kitchen appliances are connected, offering various benefits to the user. Among these, there is also the possibility of connecting to the appropriate app to be updated on consumption, obtain information on the most used programs and take advantage of suggestions.
When nature inspires efficiency
The Nautilus and Aries technologies, developed by Faber for some hood models, are inspired by nature, giving life to solutions that reduce consumption and increase efficiency. As for the first technology, observation of nature inspired the design of the impeller, which captures the golden ratio of the nautilus mollusk. The result is a high-performance diffuser with a very small footprint: the optimized geometries thanks to an accurate study of fluid dynamics do not obstruct the passage of the air, moreover the thickness is only 15 cm. This solution guarantees high performance with limited consumption. The Aries technology, on the other hand, takes its name from the shape of the internal diffuser of the engines, which reminds the head of an aries. The hoods that integrate this technology achieve high performance in terms of extraction, energy efficiency and silence.

Not only large household appliances
The issue of sustainability and energy saving is increasingly important in the household appliances sector, and not only with regard to large domestic appliances. Among the Sda (small domestic appliances) companies involved in creating efficient solutions, for example, there is Reber which, among its products, offers the Gourmet Sous-Vide line of vacuum cooking appliances. These household appliances have an energy saving system with an insulating cavity which limits the heat dispersion.
